Snohomish County's Jet City Rollergirls Begin New Season on Saturday

Snohomish County's all female, flat track roller derby league begins with two matches: Camero Harem vs. Pink Pistols and CarnEvil vs. Hula Honeys.

The fifth season of the Jet City Rollergirls, an all female, flat track roller derby league, begins Saturday.

The league has four teams, and they will be playing at Everett Community College. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and play begins at 6.

The Jet City Rollergirls played their first three seasons at Edmonds Community College, said public relations coordinator Elaine Norton.

Saturday's first game is a rematch of last year's final game as champion Camaro Harem goes up against the Pink Pistols. The second game features the Hula Honeys against CarnEvil.

There are several skaters with ties to Edmonds, said Norton. Chris McNeal (aka Slick), who plays with the Hula Honeys and is also on our all-star team, lives in Edmonds. Becky West (aka Death Cab Dixie), who plays with the Pink Pistols, runs her massage therapy business in Edmonds.

In a poignant note, Julie Janeshefskie of Camero Harem (Rita N' Weep) will not be playing this weekend. Janeshefskie and husband Tim Leonard lost their 9-year-old daughter, Tobiah Leonard (nicknamed Zippy), during the .

"There is no ceremony planned," said Norton. "There are a a few subtle things that our team will do in memory of Zippy. But we are keeping everything low profile at this point in order to allow Rita to stay out of the spotlight and give her the space she needs to move on."

Jet City Rollergirls is a nonprofit organization dedicated to community service, providing a positive environment for women of all backgrounds, and promoting the sport of roller derby through local, regional, national, and international competition.

The Jet City Rollergirls also have a select traveling team called the Jet City Bombers.
