SeaWolves Announce Schedule; First Home Game June 1 at Edmonds Stadium

The 16-game season begins on the road May 20 against the Fraser Valley Mariners.

The Edmonds-based North Sound SeaWolves will open their 16-game Premier Development League 2012 season on May 20 on the road in Abbotsford, BC, vs. the Fraser Valley Mariners, kicking off the second season for the PDL soccer team.

The SeaWolves will play their eight home games at Edmonds Stadium this season .

“We’re very excited to be playing at Edmonds Stadium this season,” SeaWolves owner/coach Alex Silva said. “We’re thankful to the Edmonds School District for accommodating us and we look forward to bringing a high level of soccer to Snohomish County again this year.”

The SeaWolves compete in the Northwest Division of the PDL, the highest level of amateur soccer in the United States. The division has two newly-named teams, as the Tacoma Tide are now the Sounders FC U-23 team and the Abbotsford Mariners are now the Fraser Valley Mariners.

The Sounders’ affiliation with Tacoma gives the division three Major League Soccer developmental teams (including Portland and Vancouver) on top of Kitsap, making it one of the toughest divisions in the PDL.

“Fans are going to see some players who were drafted by Major League Soccer, in some cases have played with the MLS senior team and guys who play at major colleges,” Silva said. “It’s a great challenge for us and a great opportunity for fans to see very good soccer in their own community.”

On Feb. 18, 50 hopeful soccer players braved a freezing wind to attend the SeaWolves open tryout at Edmonds Stadium.

Some traveled from as far as Spokane and Portland, and and one even flew in from Michigan. They were led through a series of conditioning and skill drills followed by full-field scrimmages. SeaWolves’ owner/coach Alex Silva said he liked what he saw.

“It wasn’t the best conditions but I was happy with the turnout and the effort that we saw,” Silva said. “We saw a few players that I can see playing at this level and a few others we want to take another look at. We wanted to see how they played within a group and how well they take coaching and there were some who showed they might be able to help us this year.”

Silva estimates that about 15 of the 50 players from the tryout would be invited to continue with the tryouts.

The SeaWolves will have the next leg of the tryout process in March, and may have a second open tryout to accommodate those unable to make the first one.
