For Warriors Baseball Team, Home Is On the Road

A wet winter and poor drainage means Edmonds-Woodway won't play a home game until next month at the earliest.

Today, the boys baseball team will be playing its fourth game of the season and has yet to have its home opener.

Blame it on the rain. And pipes.

A wetter-than-average winter and drainage issues haven taken their toll on the home field, leaving the outfield a mucky, messy mess that is not suitable for action. The result: home games have been played at neutral sites, at Mountlake Terrace and Shorewood high schools, said athletic director Julie Stroncek, who searches for new fields weekly.

Edmonds-Woodway isn’t the only team affected. Several schools in the Edmonds School District are facing the same problem, said athletic director Jan Beglau. “Playing on some of these fields is just not an option,” she said. “There have been a lot of cancellations.”

Schools with artificial turf are in demand, Beglau added.

The earliest home game to be played at E-W, which could change depending on the weather, is April 5 against Jackson High School. The next home game after that is scheduled April 12 against Kamiak.

So far, the schedule hasn’t affected the Warriors, who are 3-0. The team plays again today against Cascade High School.  It’s another home game, so E-W fans will have to show their support by cheering at Mountlake Terrace High School.

This year’s team, coached by Dan Somoza, includes the following players:

Seniors: Ryan Brown, Derek Callahan, Austin Jones
Juniors: Patrick Bernard, Ryan Budnick, Justin Jolly, Dylan Pratt, Ben Roquet
Sophomores: Max Bennett, Austin Holmes, Alex Hull, Matt Kennelly, Bryce Mezich, Troy Rheinford
Freshmen: Tate Budnick, Mac McLachlan
