Edmonds Petanque Club Raises over $4,000 for Food Bank

On Saturday, Aug. 24, 21 teams of two gathered at Civic Playfield to play in the Edmonds Petanque Tournament to raise funds and collect food for the Edmonds Food Bank.

What is Petanque (pronounced pay-tonk) all about? Petanque is a French game, similar to the Italian game of Bocce, but played with metal balls (boules) usually on a crushed rock court. In last Saturday’s tournament the preliminary rounds were played on the soccer field and the playoffs were played on the club’s three courts.

Preliminary financial results show that the tournament will raise in excess of $4,000, which includes 75 percent of the tournament net proceeds, the estimated cost of the food donations collected on site, and all the cash donations received for the Food Bank during the tournament, according to a news release from the club. This amount exceeds the previous tournaments held in 2011 and 2012.

First place in the tournament went to Lee Harris and Greg Conyers of the Seattle Petanque Club. In second place were husband and wife Dan Feaster and Nan Walters formerly from the Fort Bragg Petanque Club. Third place was taken by Carl Herbert and Sam Shanshory of Edmonds.
