Stadium Jam! Jam the Stands! Warriors and Mavericks Renew Rivalry Tonight

The Edmonds Stadium stands will be packed for this nonconference game featuring natural and longtime rivals. Barbecue dinner benefiting E-W begins at 5 p.m.

Tonight, it doesn’t really matter what the teams’ records are.

It’s a high school football game between Edmonds-Woodway and Meadowdale, which means the stands will be packed with screaming kids in colorful outfits—and their equally rowdy parents—for this Edmonds School District rivalry.

E-W students call it Stadium Jam.

To Meadowdale students, it’s Jam the Stands.

It’s a home game for the Mavs, but as usual will be played at Edmonds Stadium on the E-W campus since Meadowdale is not set up for a football stadium.

In recent years, the 4A Warriors have been favored over the 3A Mavericks. Last year, E-W won 10-7. But that’s not the case this year. E-W is 0-2, having lost to Monroe and Marysville-Pilchuck in two nonconference games. The team, under coach John Gradwohl, is also shaky at quarterback.

Meadowdale is 2-0 and led by steady quarterback Brian Marty.

Here’s a preview of the game by Patch regional sports editor Mike Baldwin.

What: Edmonds-Woodway vs. Meadowdale

Where: Edmonds Stadium on the Edmonds-Woodway campus

When: Tonight at 8

Breakdown: Edmonds-Woodway has continued the struggles it had to end last season, dropping its first two games of the 2011 campaign. The Warriors followed their upset loss to Monroe in the season opener with a 21-13 loss at Marysville-Pilchuck last Friday.

Edmonds-Woodway has already used three quarterbacks on the year, with the trio combining to throw four interceptions in the first two games. The once-potent Warriors running attack has also gone a little limp, gaining just 168 yards through two games.

Meadowdale is 2-0 on the season and is averaging 42.5 points per game. Meadowdale has not allowed a score in the first half so far this season. In addition to quarterback Brian Marty, the Mavs feature running backs Kyle Newsom and Giavani Shepard.

Edmonds-Woodway's annual salmon barbecue will be held before the game from 5 to 7:30 p.m. It will be held in the courtyard entrance just across the street from the north ticket entrance. Tickets available at the event. The dinner is $10. Hots dogs available for $5.
