Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Alex Springer
The Edmonds-Woodway High junior is taking part in the rigorous Washington Aerospace Scholars program.
Name: Alex Springer, 17, nominated by Washington Aerospace Scholars.
School: Edmonds-Woodway High School
Accomplishments: Alex is among the 287 talented high-school juniors statewide accepted into the fifth year of Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS), a distance learning program with a NASA-designed curriculum. It covers the history of space exploration, the space shuttle, the International Space Station, the moon and Mars.
From now through May, Alex will complete 10 lessons, submitting quizzes, math solutions, essays and graphics concerning these topics every other week. Alex will independently select a topic of interest for a final project, combining an essay with a graphic. Based on scores on the phase one curriculum, as many as 160 of the top performing scholars will be invited to an all-expenses-paid summer residency at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
Keys to Awesomeness: Alex is a great student who is on EW’s cross-country and track teams. He is active in snowboarding, swimming, bike racing and working out.
This is part of a new weekly feature, Whiz Kid, which will run each week. We want to pick out an outstanding Edmonds kid, youth group, teen, or sports team to profile each week.
Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout? Did your soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.
