Home Sweet Home: Edmonds-Woodway Baseball Field Getting New Drainage

Constant rain and drainage issues forced E-W to play its home games on the road. Drainage issues are also being taken care of at Meadowdale High School.

It looks like the boys baseball team will finally be able to play some home games.

Now that the school year is over, much-needed drainage upgrades are taking place on the baseball field. Work is expected to be completed by the end of July.

The work is being done by the district’s capital projects and maintenance departments, as well as Greenshield Systems.

Upgrades are also being performed at Meadowdale High School.

According to Edmonds School District spokeswoman DJ Jakala, the fields will not be opened until sometime in February, at the earliest. This is to allow time for the grass to mature, a standard practice.

In 2010 and this year, a wetter-than-average winter and drainage issues , leaving the outfield a mucky mess not suitable for action. The result was home games played at neutral sites Mountlake Terrace and Shorewood high schools.

E-W athletic director Julie Stroncek was forced to search for new fields weekly.

Edmonds-Woodway isn’t the only team affected. Several schools in the Edmonds School District faced the same problem, including Meadowdale.
