Education Bill Sponsored By Edmonds State Senator Moves Forward

Senate Bill 5442, sponsored by Paull Shin (D-Edmonds) was passed in the State Senate by a sweeping majority.

An education bill sponsored by Paull Shin, the state senator from Edmonds, passed in the Washington State Senate today.

Bill 5442 now heads to the House of Representatives, where it also must find approval.

The bill asks higher education institutions to develop more options for students to earn degree credits. Students could then graduate up to a year earlier and spend less money on their college education.

The guidelines, which would not be required or enforced, seek to avoid making students attend summer classes or take on more than a full-time class load. The bill asks colleges to think creatively in generating new opportunities for students to acquire credits.

“I believe it is our duty to do everything we can to provide more options for our students,” said Shin.
