Edmonds-Woodway Falters in Fourth Quarter; Lake Stevens Wins Wesco Title

Running back Desmond Young has a monster game, but the Vikings score 21 unanswered points to win 35-31 in game played at Edmonds Stadium.

Although sophomore running back Desmond Young had a monster game and scored three touchdowns, the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors lost to the Lake Stevens Vikings 35-31 Friday night in a battle to determine the Wesco 4A championship at Edmonds Stadium.

The Warriors (5-4) lead 21-14 at the half as they picked off Lake Stevens (9-1) quarterback Jack Nelson twice and scored on two touchdowns by Young (who had 92 yards in the half) and one by Mac McLachlan.

In the third quarter, an E-W drive was halted by a penalty, but the Warriors got close enough for Connor Davis to connect on a 25-yard field goal. But there was no doubt about scoring on the Warriors's next drive, as Young scored on a thrilling 92-yard-run for his third TD.

It has still been a good season for E-W. The Warriors began the season miserably, losing their first three games: 30-24 to Monroe on Sept. 2, 21-13 to Marysville-Pilchuck Sept. 9 and 27-7 to Meadowdale Sept. 16.

But head coach John Gradwohl changed the team's strategy, relying on the two-pronged attack of running backs Desmond Young and Mark Coutee and giving the starting quarterback job to Davis Giles.

E-W won its next five games: 31-27 over Mariner Sept. 23; 63-42 over Jackson Sept. 30; 42-21 over Kamiak Oct. 7; 35-0 over Cascade Oct. 14; and 34-7 over Redmond Oct. 21.

The Warriors finished as Wesco South champs, and play their first game of the playoffs next Friday against South Kitsap at Edmonds Stadium.
