Edmonds School District Student Athlete-Scholars Honored With Scholarships

Amia Nash and Josh Jordan are the top winners from Edmonds-Woodway High. Students also honored from Meadowdale, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace high schools.

You wouldn’t think that there was much more Amia Nash could accomplish at .

With her high school career wrapping up, the 18-year-senior has made her mark as one of the school’s most distinguished athletes.

“Amia Nash is one of the most amazing kids I’ve had the pleasure of teaching and working with,” said Julie Stroncek, E-W athletic director.

This week at the school, Nash was awarded the top prize at the 10th annual Scholar-Athlete and Coach/Community Recognition Banquet. She garnered a $3,000 scholarship, that she will use, with other scholarships and awards she already picked up, when she begins college this fall at Santa Clara University in California.

Nash is a three-sport athlete—basketball, track and cross country—and excels in all three. She’s competed in state tournaments in her sports, and finished fifth in state in the 400 meters as a junior last year. Amia owns the school record in the 400 meters, and is also a member of the school’s record-setting relay teams in both the 400- and 800-meter relays.

Nash is E-W’s ASB vice-president and has taken a rigorous course load, including numerous IB and AP classes.

Her GPA? 4.0, of course.

The scholarships were in partnership with local business owners, community members, alumni, and coaches. Each scholar-athlete was awarded a scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Every year, four student athletes from each of our four comprehensive high schools are nominated as recipients.

Since the inaugural event in 2002, more than 170 student-athletes  have benefitted from more than $265,000 to assist with their post-secondary academic goals, said Edmonds School District athletic director Jan Beglau.

Josh Jordan, who played football and basketball, was the top boys’ E-W scholarship winner, at $2,500. Other nominees from Edmonds-Woodway were Sydney Donaldson, Sara Aranda and John Kim.

Meadowdale honorees included Cameron Hathaway,  Matt Crichlow, Ava Izedepski and Kari Beaulieu.

Students from Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood high schools also received awards. Tyler Baker, Mindy James, Samantha Kinsella and Lance Fernandez from Mountlake Terrace; and Kelsey Parker ($3,000 winner), Wesley Smith, Christopher Kossik and Colleen Hill from Lynnwood.

Honored coaches included Edmonds-Woodway swim coach Kate Trettevik, Meadowdale tennis coach Mark Schneider, track coach Russ Vincent of Mountlake Terrace, and golf coach John Richer of Lynnwood.
