Edmonds Cleanup: Soundview Students Do Their Part for Earth Day

Brackett's Landing gets refreshed.

As part of an Earth Day-themed study of biomes and animal adaptation, second-graders from Soundview School marked celebrated Earth Day—which was Sunday—by cleaning up Brackett's Landing in Edmonds on Monday.

The cleanup was part of the students' current unit on animal adaptation, said Jessica Burns of Soundview.

"The students are studying the biomes of the world and how animals adapt to the conditions in different environments," she said. "A significant part of the unit is how human actions affect ecosystems, which leads to impacting the animals that live there."

The class also met with a park ranger and discussed animal habitats and beach ecosystems. Molly Bisset, Soundview School second-grade teacher, said she chose Brackett’s Landing because of its lush ecosystem.

“Earth Day is a chance for all of us to show our appreciation for the plant,” said Bisset. “The beach cleanup is our way of not only giving back to the earth, but it also offers a valuable lesson about how fragile the environment is and how our actions impact numerous species.”
