E-W Girls Fall to Lewis and Clark, 61-52; Play Consolation Game at 2 p.m.

The Warriors' season isn't over yet. The team plays today against Bellarmine Prep.

Devyn Galland scored 20 points and Lewis and Clark knocked Edmonds-Woodway out of contention for the state title with a 61-52 victory on Thursday night in the 4A Hardwood Classic girls state tournament at the Tacoma Dome.

The Warriors led Lewis and Clark 36-34 early in the third quarter, but then scored just one point over the next 7:12 of game time as the Tigers pulled away for the victory.

“We were probably taking some really quick shots and nothing was going in,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Duane Hodges said. “We wanted to push the tempo a little bit, but when you push the tempo, it doesn’t mean you have to take the first shot available…we just got a little impatient.”

The Warriors were doomed by a huge disparity in terms of success at the free throw line. Edmonds-Woodway made just 5 of 18 free throws on the night, while Lewis and Clark connected on 20 of 29 from the charity stripe, including an 11 of 12 effort from Galland.

“That’s atypical for us,” Hodges said of his teams’ free throw woes. “We’re usually a pretty good shooting team, really pretty good free-throw shooting team and [Lewis and Clark was] hitting the shots from the free-throw line.”

Edmonds-Woodway began the game on a positive note, jumping out to an early 9-4 lead and taking a 13-11 lead after one quarter behind the scoring of Ashley Albertson. Albertson scored 13 points in the first half and finished with 19 on 9 of 14 shooting to lead Edmonds-Woodway.

But Lewis and Clark began to expose the undersized Warriors in the second quarter. Abang Taka, 6'3, began to control the high post, which opened up Lewis and Clark’s entire offense, as the Tigers outscored Edmonds-Woodway 22-13 in the second quarter to take a 33-26 halftime lead.

The Warriors started the second half hot, using three-pointers from Madeline Kasper and Angela Woods to go on a 10-1 run and take their first leads since early in the second quarter, 36-34.

But Edmonds-Woodway’s offense went stagnant from that point on. The Warriors made just two field goals over the next 11:41 of game time as Lewis and Clark pulled away. Edmonds-Woodway attempted to foul to prolong the game, but the Tigers locked it up at the line, making 12 free throws in the final 3:28 of the game.

The Warriors will have little time to dwell on the loss, as they are scheduled to take on Bellarmine Prep today at 2 p.m. in the consolation bracket. Bellarmine Prep lost earlier in the night to Woodinville, which will face off against Lewis and Clark.

“We’ve had a great year so far, but it’s not the end of the year,” Hodges said. “We’re going to come out, we’re going to have a great time tonight, come back really hard tomorrow and we’ll see who’s got a Warriors spirit, Bellarmine or us.”
