Congratulations Graduates!

June is the month of graduations, and Edmonds has both high school and college students receiving their diplomas this week.

At the end of this week, students from Edmonds will don their caps and gowns, walk to the podium, and receive a diploma.

Some will be graduating from high school, excited and idealistic, ready to move on to the next big step in their lives. Others will be will finishing up degrees at , stepping out into the workforce, prepared for their careers. Regardless of whether it’s high school or college, graduation is one of the most thrilling times in a student’s life. That goes for teachers as well.

“This is a very exciting time of year for all teachers,” said Edmonds Woodway instructor David Quinn, who has been a part of numerous graduations in his 13 years at the school. “We’ve been in a kind of collaboration with the community and with families for the past 12 years, helping to shape and educate the next generation. This week is a milestone for all of us as young people graduate and enter the next stage of their lives.”

This week both Meadowdale High School and will see its seniors off in graduation ceremonies at the Edmonds Woodway Stadium. EWHS will hold its graduation tomorrow, and MHS will do the same on Saturday. Lynwood High School, also in the Edmonds School District, will hold its ceremonies on Saturday, June 18.

“It’s exciting,” Quinn wrote in an email referring to graduation season, “but the accomplishment really belongs to the students! The Edmonds School District has high graduation standards, and we’re always proud to see our kids meet the first major goal of their lives.”

This year, Edmonds Community College will be awarding 2,022 degrees, and as a result, the ceremony was moved to Comcast Arena to accommodate all the graduates, their friends and family. The student speakers for the event are Marti Smithsund of Seattle, who will graduate with her Project Management certificate, and Omar Willis of Mill Creek, who has earned his Associate of Arts degree.

We say hats off to all the graduates out there—never let your aspirations fade. Quinn agrees.

“I think all students should have BIG, AUDATIOUS goals,” Quinn said. “Something to shoot for that can keep them striving forward, rather than finding contentment with just the ordinary. I think, too, that as a culture we tend to wrap ourselves up in WHAT we do instead of WHO we are. The best advice I ever got is a quote from William Saroyan. He said: ‘In the time of your life, live.’”
