Education Supporters to Protest Funding Cuts By Waving Signs

Demonstrations planned at five busy intersections in the Edmonds School District, including two in Edmonds.

On Monday, Nov. 28, members of the Edmonds Education Association will join with parents, administrators and other education supporters as part of an effort to persuade lawmakers to protect school funding.

After school, during evening drive time, teachers, principals, superintendents, parents and students will stand at five key intersections in the Edmonds School District, including two in Edmonds, and hold signs to protest further cuts to education.

For decades, Washington schools have ranked among the nation’s finest, says the association. But after more than $2.5 billion in recent school funding cuts from state lawmakers, new proposals could wipe out another $1 billion or more in funding, it says.

“We must all be held accountable,” said Andi Nofziger-Meadows, president of the Edmonds Education Association. “Not just educators, students and parents, but also the elected officials who must respect Washington’s long-standing commitment to education. Our legislators have the final decision on what cuts, if any, are made. Legislators need to be willing to invest in our students, not hurt them through further cuts.

“Our kids who are in school today don’t get a second chance at a good education. Members of the Edmonds Education Association will do our part to educate the legislature and the community of the harmful impact additional cuts will have on our schools and students.”
