Yost Pool Opening Delayed Until Monday, June 10

A leaking hot water tank is the culprit behind the delayed opening of Yost Park Pool, Parks and Rec. officials said.

Edmonds Parks and Recreation Department said it's hoping to get Yost Pool up and running by next week, after unexpected repairs delayed its scheduled June 3 open date.

The pool's shower hot water tank was discovered this year to be broken and must be replaced, Parks Department spokeswoman Renée McRae said. While that work is hoped to be completed in time for next Monday's new opening date, McRae said there is currently no plan to replace the 40-year-old facility.

The city issued the following statement about the pool opening delay:

Yost Pool was set to open on June 3rd this year.  Unfortunately, due to some unanticipated repairs, the City is announcing the pool opening date of June 10, 2013.

“Yost Pool is more than 40 years old and every year when we start it up for the season, we cross our fingers that everything is still operational.  We do provide some preventative maintenance year around, but often with such an old system, there are issues that arise, “ stated Carrie Hite, Edmonds Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Director.

Two years ago, the pool lining was cracked, and the pool had to be relined.  Last year, a lot of the tiles had cracked over the winter, requiring replacement.  In addition, the spa needed repair.  This year there was a leak in the hot water tank that services the showers.  The tank was old, rusted on the inside, and beyond repair.

The City is currently working with Ameresco Quantam to replace the old system with a 96% energy efficient system, including replacement of the shower heads.  The City is pleased with the timing of this project, and also thinks it may stay on budget to replace the boiler in the Fall.
