The Daily Herald Endorses Dave Earling for Mayor of Edmonds

Snohomish County's largest newspaper says his leadership skills needed at City Hall.

Dave Earling has received plenty of endorsements in his bid to become Edmonds’ next mayor, but he may have picked up the most important today: The Daily Herald, Snohomish County’s largest newspaper, has endorsed Earling over incumbent Mayor Mike Cooper.

“Edmonds voters want to see results, not drama,” the paper wrote. “We agree, and believe Earling is just the kind of leader who can deliver that kind of change.”

Among Earling’s other endorsements are from the Edmonds Police Officers Association and three former Edmonds mayors: Gary Haakenson, Barb Fahey and Larry Naughten.

It was last year that Haakenson resigned as mayor to take a job as deputy county executive to Aaron Reardon. Haakenson has been one of Earling’s biggest supporters.

Earling, a former three-term member of the Edmonds City Council, is also endorsed by nine current Snohomish County mayors and numerous past councilmembers in Edmonds, including the outspoken Ron Wambolt and Jeff Wilson.

Earling is a Republican, although the mayor’s position in nonpartisan. He gave up his appointed position on the state’s Growth Management Hearings Board to run for Edmonds mayor.

The Herald, in bringing up and the resignation , says: “That cloud, and budget woes that have the city asking voters to pass three property-tax levies this fall to maintain basic services, suggest the need for new leadership.

“Earling has the background, backbone and people skills to steer Edmonds in a more positive, prosperous direction.”
