Seattle Bans Plastic Bags, Joining Edmonds, Mukilteo and Bellingham

A nickel fee will be charged to those using paper bags from stores.

Seattle became the first city in King County to ban the single-use plastic bags from groceries and other retail stores, reports seattlepi.com. The ban is expected to be approved by Mayor Mike McGinn.

On Aug. 27, 2010, to ban the single-use, checkout line plastic bags in grocery stores. Edmonds is still the only city in the state where the ban is actually in effect. Similar bans in and have passed but have yet to be implemented.

Seattle's ban, passed by a unanimous vote at the city council's Monday meeting, includes a 5-cent fee on the use of paper bags from stores. It is set to take effect in July.
