New Sewage Plant Near Edmonds Beset With Delays, Should Be Ready Soon

The Herald reports that the Alderwood Water & Wastewater District's $93.4 million plant is two years behind schedule, over budget and has a leaky roof, but is expected to be complete in a few months.

Work at a new sewage treatment plant for south Snohomish County on Picnic Point Road is behind schedule, nearly $400,00 over budget and the roof leaks, reports the Herald.

The work on the Lynnwood-based Alderwood Water & Wastewater District’s $93.4 million plant -- at 6315 Picnic Point Road between Edmonds and Mukilteo -- is expected to wrap up in a few month. It was originally scheduled to be finished two years ago.

But it has been slowed by an explosion in 2012 that injured five and resulting disputes with the contractor, Apollo Inc., based in Kennewick. Most of the disputes have been cleared up, but the roof on one building leaks, and a critical piece of equipment, a waste drier, is being finished by another contractor.

Because the drying equipment has not been in operation, the district has had to truck waste to other plants, last year costing some $1 million. A January agreement with Apollo should fix the leaking roof, and once the drying equipment is complete the plant should be fully operational.

The district supplies water to Edmonds, and its service area includes Brier, Bothell and parts of Mountlake Terrace and Everett. The new plant will serve about a third of the district’s customers, mostly west of Highway 99.
