New Finance Director Selected for City of Edmonds

Roger Neumaier, former finance director for Snohomish County, has accepted the job of finance director for the city of Edmonds.

Roger Neumaier, former finance director for Snohomish County, has accepted the job of finance director for the city of Edmonds.

“We are fortunate to have someone join our city with the quality reputation, experience and knowledge as Mr. Neumaier,” Edmonds Mayor Dave Earling said in a news release. 

The City went through an extensive process to recruit, interview and evaluate applicants that included community members, City Council, staff, and the Mayor, narrowing the field to two final applicants. Those candidates interviewed with the City Council at an open public meeting on May 14, 2013. 

The mayor selected Neumaier as the number one candidate, and advanced him to the next phase of the selection process which included a complete background, criminal history, credit, and reference checks.  

After this was completed the mayor extended an offer to Neumaier, who was confirmed by the City Council June 4.

Neumaier was appointed Snohomish County Finance Director in January of 2004 and has been responsible for developing the County Budget since 1999. During his tenure as Finance Director, the county's financial policies and practices were rated as "strong" by Standard and Poor’s bond rating services and the County developed a national reputation for innovative implementation of priority-based budgeting.

In his role as County Finance Director, Neumaier has also been responsible for county-wide purchasing and risk management services. From 1992 to 1999, Neumaier was Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for the Washington State Health Care Authority, the state agency that manages both the Basic Health Plan and State’s employee benefits programs.

Between 1987 and 1992, Neumaier was Chief Financial Officer for Industrial Insurance at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. During Neumaier’s tenure, Labor and Industries won the prestigious Ford Foundation Innovations in Government Award for programmatic and financial innovations.

Prior to working for the State, Neumaier was employed by Seafirst Corporation.   Roger is a Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He and his wife Marsha have three adult children.
