Main Street Improvement in Edmonds in Its Final Stretch

The street was open Saturday for Small Business Saturday, but recent rains have halted its completion.

Edmonds shoppers received a tantalizing break on Saturday during the ongoing construction work on Main Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

The stretch of road was open to traffic and parking on the north side of the street for holiday shoppers and for national Small Business Saturday.

However, inclement weather has postponed the completion of the Main Street Decorative Lighting and Sidewalk Enhancement project, which the city had hoped to complete by Nov. 19. The City says that the recent heavy rains over the last several days prevented the contractor from completing the project on time.

Main Street is closed today again for construction as the remaining gaps of sidewalk and small area of asphalt paving are ongoing during the current stretch of dry weather.

As before, however, Main Street is still accessible to pedestrians. There are now new sidewalks, and new street lighting is in place on the north side of the street.

Other iImprovements include include street trees, a midblock pedestrian crosswalk, flower basket poles, public art, benches, trash receptacles and bike racks.

Short-term street closures of Main Street and Sixth Avenue will be necessary through the end of November and early December to complete this work.
