Bye Bye Bowling Alley: Walgreens Construction Scheduled for Late 2013

Edmonds Hearing Examiner: "The City is constitutionally barred from compelling the applicant to bear the burdern of providing the Edmonds community with a bowling alley."

City of Edmonds Hearing Examiner Phil Olbrechts has ruled in favor of Walgreens, which means the nation's largest drugstore chain will be replacing Robin Hood Lanes, a bowling alley with 50 years of history in town.

Construction is expected to begin late in 2013.

to build a new 14,490 square foot health and "daily living destination" in Edmonds, in addition to a 3,373-square-foot bank. The developer is Seven Hills Properties.

The site is expected to be divided into two lots—one for the drugstore and one for a bank.

"Community concern over the loss of this valuable community assest (Robin Hood Lanes) is certainly understandable," Olbrechts wrote in his decision.

"However, the due process and takings clauses of the state and federal constitutions strictly prohibit the City from denying the permit applications in order to preserve the bowling alley. The City is constitutionally barred from compelling the applicant to bear the burdern of providing the Edmonds community with a bowling alley."
