Edmonds Would Be In 7th Congressional District Under New Plan

Redistricting plan carves up 1st District, now held by departing Jay Inslee, into a toss up between Republicans and Democrats.

Edmonds would become part of the 7th Congressional District represented by Jim McDermott (D-Seattle) in a new redistricting proposal submitted Wednesday. Edmonds is currently part of the 1st District, which Democratic Congressman Jay Inslee is leaving to run for governor.

Republican redistricting commissioner Slade Gorton and Democratic commissioner Tim Ceis, both of King County, developed the plan for the Washington State Redistricting Commission. The commission revealed 10 newly drawn Congressional districts.

Their proposal creates five strong Democratic districts and four strong Republican districts and one toss up, the 1st District.

The Seattle Times reports that the proposed maps are not final yet. At least three of the four voting commissioners, two Democrats and two Republicans, must approve the new maps. The Times reports that the commission has until Dec. 31 to finish its work or the task falls to the state Supreme Court.

According to the Tacoma News-Tribune, the plan turns Inslee’s 1st district into a political toss up that ranges from northeast King County north to include the rural portions of Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties.
