Edmonds City Council Looking for Public Comment on Three Proposed Levies

Property owners are being asked to fund safety, parks, roads and the general fund. The levies will be on the the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

Edmonds City Council President Strom Peterson is asking for the public’s help in determining the pros and cons on three separate levy requests that will be put to voters on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

Peterson hopes to have six committees formed by Aug. 15. Each committee will prepare written statements to be included on general-election ballot pamphlets to be mailed in October.

The levies are the result of Mayor Mike Cooper’s that the council members work on presenting tax increases to voters to help with public safety, as well as maintaining and improving street and park improvements and contributing to the city’s general fund.

If all three levies are passed, owners of a $375,000 home would pay about $161 a year more in property taxes.

"While (the levys) cannot rebuild of our workforce needs, do all major
projects, or catch up all of the deferred maintenance needs for our city facilities, it does position us to be healthy over the next four years without further cutting needed service," Cooper said in a memo to the City Council in March.

Ordinance No. 3848 seeks to maintain current levels of service in public safety, parks and other city services.

Ordinance No. 3849 would fund street pavement overlays, where asphalt is added to exisiting streets to improve their longevity.

Ordinance No. 3850 seeks to fund building maintenance and park improvements.

The proposed levies are for three years.
