City Crews Successfully Fix Underground Leak at Edmonds Fountain

Temporary patches being placed on three holes. Repair to decorative touches to come at a later date.

The City of Edmonds Public Works Department today successfully located and repaired a near the Edmonds fountain at Fifth Avenue and Main Street.

A mixture of rubber, compression and stainless steel strip and bolts has fixed the circular crack on the 12-inch cast-iron main, said Public Works director Phil Williams. "They are strong but brittle, so when they break they let loose all at once," he said.

Crews dug three holes around the fountain, which will be filled with rock. Temporary asphalt patches are being placed over the dug-out portions of road, and Williams says drivers should be able to make it around the fountain's roundabout after 4 p.m. today.

More permanent road repair left from the holes, as well as repair to the decorative touches that where damaged around the fountain, will take place tomorrow and in the near future, Williams said.

"The crew did a spectacular job today, and I was real proud of them," Williams said. "I thought downtown functioned pretty well, all things considered. I don’t think people suffered too badly."
