Website Shows Where DUI Patrols Will Be, Including Edmonds

Edmonds Police Department praises efforts of WaTikiLeaks, which is sponsored by the Washington State Transportation Commission.

Attention, Edmonds drivers.

The Washington State Transportation Commission has launched a website, WaTikiLeaks, that shows the dates, times, and locations of DUI patrols in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties.

The patrols are published in advance so those who are drinking can make other plans for their ride home. As of now, the site is just listing “problem areas” in Edmonds.

The transportation associate and the Washington State Patrol are partners in Target Zero, the state’s goal of no annual traffic fatalities by 2030. Target Zero teams include increased numbers of Washington State Patrol and local police, special prosecutors and community members who are focused on stopping DUI crashes. While on patrol, law enforcement may take action on any crime that is called to their attention.

The state’s Drive Hammered-Get Nailed campaign of increased patrols, which includes the Edmonds Police Department, is currently active through Sept. 5.

Beginning Saturday and continuing through Labor Day Monday, locations to be determined will include problem roadways that have shown to have a high number of impaired driving collisions, as well as a high number of those arrested for DUI.

According to the WaTikiLeaks website, targeted roadways in Edmonds will have increased patrols at 7 p.m. on both Sept. 9 and Sept. 10.

“The Washington Traffic Safety Commission has helped Edmonds Police Department in its overall traffic enforcement and public safety efforts,” said Sgt. Mike Blackburn of the Edmonds PD.

“The website has help us obtain traffic enforcement related grant dollars every year for the past 20 years. It also offers contact information for resources around the state and country for available grants and traffic safety information, such as traffic crash data. Without the support and assistance of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Edmonds Police would not be as well equipped to effectively investigate motor vehicle collisions or enforce the traffic safety laws.”

Blackburn says the Edmonds PD has two officers assigned to the Target Zero team. These two officers arrest about 125 impaired drivers each year. The entire police department makes about 250 DUI arrests per year.

More than 40,000 DUI arrests are made in Washington each year.
