Spike in Thefts at Parks, Trailheads Prompts Sheriff's Office Advisory

Snohomish County authorities offer tips after the milder spring weather brings an increase in thefts and car prowl incidents in both rural and urban parks and trailheads.

An increase of thefts at park and trailheads this spring has prompted the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office to urge residents to be alert and take steps to minimize the problem.

The sheriff’s office noted in a press release that car prowl incidents and thefts have increased at parks and trailheads in both rural and urban areas with the warmer spring weather. It notes Snohomish County includes some 10,000 acres of park land and hundreds of miles of trails.

Shari Ireton, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said examples include seven thefts at access point's along the Centennial Trail during one recent weekend.
