Firefighters quickly got the fire under control--within about 10 minutes--Hynes said, and no other units were affected, but the first-floor condo where the fire occurred sustained about $30,000 in damages.

Hynes said fire investigators remain on the scene, where they found a smoke alarm with no batteries that had been disconnected from the building's electrical system.

Hynes said the district reminds people that it is currently offering free home safety checks and fire alarm evaluations through a Vision 20/20 Grant awarded through the federal Assistance to Firefighter Grant program.
