Last Week at the Fire Department

Snohomish County Fire District 1 responded to 302 calls the week of June 9-15: 243 emergency medical aid calls, 18 motor vehicle collisions, 19 fires, six service calls, one natural gas leak and 15 automatic fire alarms.

June 9

PEDESTRIAN HIT BY VEHICLE:  At 9:40 a.m., a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the corner of Dayton Street and Sunset Avenue S in Edmonds. Both the driver and pedestrian sustained injuries and were transported by firefighters to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital for treatment.

FIRE:  At 9:33 p.m., a first-floor apartment storage room caught fire at Mariner Meadows Apartments in the 600 block of Center Road south of Everett.  The residents safely evacuated after attempting to put out the fire with extinguishers. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and made sure it did not extend beyond the storage room.

June 10

COLLISION:  At 12:38 p.m., two vehicles collided on eastbound 164th Street SW at 36th Avenue W north of Lynnwood. Firefighters transported two patients -- one to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital and one to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.

June 11

KITCHEN FIRE:  At 2:24 p.m., a kitchen oil fire was reported at a home in the 23000 block of 82nd Place W in Edmonds. Smoke was coming from one end of the house and attic vents when firefighters arrived. The fire was contained to the kitchen, attic and roof above the kitchen. No one was injured. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

COLLISION:  At 7:35 p.m., three cars collided at the corner of 212th Street SW and Highway 99 in Edmonds. Firefighters transported one patient to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital for treatment.

HOUSE FIRE:  At 10:06 p.m., a house fire was reported in the 5500 block of 242nd Street SW in Mountlake Terrace.  The resident had left the home while food was cooking on the stovetop.  He returned to find the house full of smoke and the kitchen in flames. He attempted to put out the blaze with two fire extinguishers, but the fire was too big. There were no injuries, but two dogs inside the house died of smoke inhalation. Firefighters contained the fire to the kitchen, but there was smoke damage throughout the house. The loss is estimated at $25,000. While fighting the fire, firefighters discovered a marijuana growing operation and the scene was turned over to police.

June 12

PEDESTRIAN HIT BY CAR:  At 2:02 p.m., a child was struck by a car at the intersection of 164th Street SW and Meadow Road north of Lynnwood. The child sustained minor injuries and was transported by firefighters to Swedish/Mill Creek Emergency Room.

COLLISION:  At 3:50 p.m., two cars were involved in a roll-over collision at 148th Street SW and 52nd Avenue W north of Lynnwood.  Firefighters transported one patient to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital and one patient to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.

GARAGE FIRE:  At 7:51 p.m., a fire was reported in a detached garage at a home in the 16700 block of 10th Place W north of Lynnwood.  Neighbors attempted to extinguish the flames with a garden hose. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.  There were no injuries.  The fire investigator determined the fire started in a bag of unused charcoal briquettes. Damage was estimated to be $20,000. 

June 13

COLLISION:  At 7:08 a.m., a blocking injury collision was reported in the 23600 block of Brier Road in Brier. Firefighters transported two patients to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital for treatment.

June 15

FATAL CAR-PEDESTRIAN COLLISION: At 4:15 p.m., a man was hit by a car as he was crossing Highway 99 in the 13400 block of north of Lynnwood. Firefighters in a medic unit returning from an aid call came upon the scene just as the incident was being reported to 9-1-1 dispatchers. The pedestrian died in the collision.

CAR-PEDESTRIAN COLLISION: At 5:03 p.m., a teenage boy was hit by a car at 10th Dr. SE and Andrew Sater Road south of Everett. Firefighters transported the teenager to Swedish/Mill Creek Emergency Room.
