Boeing 787 Dreamliner Catches Fire, Closes Runways at London's Heathrow Airport

The big jet was grounded in January after two cases of its batteries overheating, in one case causing a fire.

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner caught fire in London July 12, prompting the closure of the Heathrow Airport's runways, according to the Everett Herald.

No one was on the plane at the time and no one has been injured, according to the report. The cause of the fire has not been released.

The big jet was grounded in January after two cases of its batteries overheating, in one case causing a fire.  Boeing then completed a series of tests of its fix, a steel box designed to contain any explosion or fire from the batteries. In April, the Federal Aviation Administration approved Boeing’s redesign of the lithium-ion battery system, clearing the way for it to return to service.

Boeing Co. operates a final assembly plant for the 787 in Everett. Company officials announced in March layoffs of some 800 machinists and said it would reduce its 787 workforce by another 2,000 to 3,000 jobs through attrition.
