Fire District 1 Seeks Nominees for Board of Fire Commissioners

Commissioner Millie Judge will be leaving the Board at the end of the year to take office in January as Snohomish County Superior Court judge.

Snohomish County Fire District 1 is seeking nominees to fill an expected vacancy on its Board of Fire Commissioners.

Commissioner Millie Judge will be leaving the Board at the end of the year to take office in January as Snohomish County Superior Court judge. The Board of Commissioners will select and appoint someone to fill the vacancy. The appointee will have to stand election in the fall to retain the seat and serve the two years remaining in Judge's six-year term.

The five-member Board of Commissioners defines the long-term vision for Fire District 1. Responsibilities include:

  •  Determining levels of service and establishing goals.
  •  Determining type and level of funding and tax levies.
  •  Approving budgets.
  •  Establishing policies and approving operational procedures.
  •  Employing key personnel and supervising the fire chief.
  •  Guiding strategic planning.
  •  Representing Fire District 1 to the public.

Commissioners attend regular board meetings two nights a month and serve on internal and external committees. They represent Fire District 1 at community events, fire service activities and other functions. Fire District 1 Commissioners also participate in state and county associations to address issues that affect fire and emergency services.

Candidates must be registered voters and live within the boundaries of Fire District 1 in unincorporated south Snohomish County (south and east of Everett, north of Edmonds and north and east of Lynnwood including the neighborhoods of Eastmont, Hilton Lake, Pioneer Trails, Seattle Hill, Silver Firs north of 148th St. SE, Martha Lake, Lake Stickney, Lake Serene, Picnic Point, Norma Beach, Esperance, Hilltop and Mariner).

Interested candidates are asked to submit an application (available at www.firedistrict1.org) and a letter of interest to Marsha Moore, Executive Assistant to the Board of Commissioners, Snohomish County Fire District 1 Headquarters, 12425 Meridian Ave. S., Everett WA 98208. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 18, 2013.

The Board of Commissioners plans to interview candidates and make a selection to fill the vacancy in February.
