No matter. There was nothing but fun at the fifth annual Polar Bear Plunge at Brackett's Landing North on New Year's Day. Although the scheduled 1 p.m. start time had passed, the assembled plungersβthose in bikinis, mankinis, board shorts, T-shirts and even an old-style bathing suitβwaited patiently for a special group.
That would be members of the Edmonds Uplift Society, a drinking and social group that started Edmonds' version of the New Year's tradition. Finally, they strode on to the beach, decked out like kings and queens in white robes, and the plunge was on.

The age of those taking part ranged from the very young to the getting-up-there.
One of those taking part, 67-year-old Robert Rhonemus of Everett, was taking part for the second year in a row. He wore the previously mentioned old-timey bathing suit, a two-piece, red-and-white pants-and-shirt ensemble.
