Looking for Healthier Choices? Event Next Week Could Help

Swedish/Edmonds, the Edmonds School District and others are sponsoring the free event with exercise and nutritional advice.

You don’t have to become a competitive athlete to enjoy the benefits of exercise and sound eating choices. Somewhere between a couch potato and obsessed athlete is a lifestyle you can choose for yourself with help available at Healthier Choices, a free family event at Mountlake Terrace Elementary on March 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event is co-sponsored by and the Edmonds School District with support from the Verdant Health Commission, and .

It will feature nutrition advice from Swedish/Edmonds registered dietitian Megan Ellison, YMCA of Snohomish County certified personal trainer Lynnette Moupas and a special video appearance by internationally known culinary and television personality Graham Kerr.

"I think we all know the top excuses for not exercising, but do you know how to work exercise into your life even if you have a great excuse?” said Ellison. “At this event, I’ll talk about how to become more active even if you don’t have time, you hate exercise and you can’t afford gym membership.”

Healthy snacks that can travel with you when you’re active will also be discussed and free samples provided for the audience. Prizes and Spanish translation will also be offered. For more information, visit swedish.org/classes.

Mountlake Terrace Elementary is at 22001 52nd Avenue W, Mountlake Terrace. This event will be the third in a series of four Healthier Choices events this year partnering Swedish/Edmonds with the Edmonds School District. The fourth Healthier Choices event is April 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Meadowdale Middle School.

Three short videos from the second event at Meadowdale Elementary are available at youtube.com/swedishedmonds.

If you want to know what it's like to have your religion disrespected, try having school camps,Read More orchestra and band concerts and back-to-school nights on the holiest of your religious holidays (equivalent to Christmas and Easter). Everyone knows that an egg hunt is an Easter event whether it's called that or not. Everyone know that a holiday tree is really a Christmas tree. Trust me, the atheists and/or non-Christians are not trying to destroy Christianity. First, it would be impossible. Second, it would be too dangerous to us personally. Last, I personally respect other's traditions, but I'm not sure the same can always be said in reverse.

Don't we have more important things to worry about? Easter Egg, Egg Hunt, who cares? It's a funRead More community event. And thank you to the sponsers that make this happen.

First of all, the government is not supposed to promote any religion. Secondly, the Easter bunnyRead More and egg hunt has no historical religious significance that I can think of, even though this is part of an American tradition. I am good with deleting the word Easter, and would like to see a departure from any emphasis on candy, which only compounds the diabetic epidemic in this country. Sometimes it is good to rethink the wisdom of something simply because it is a "tradition".
