‘Wind Junkies With Flexible Jobs’

Windsurfers take to the water—and the sky—at Marina Beach in Edmonds.

When the wind whips up as it has the past few days, power losses and downed trees ensue.

For windsurfers, however, it's nirvana.

Thursday morning at Marina Beach was a perfect time to take advantage of the blustery conditions. That's what two windsurfers did, to the delight of a few spectators watching from the off-leash dog park and a few hardy walkers covering their faces with their hands to ward off the wind's chill.

"We're wind junkies with flexible jobs," said Andy, preparing his board and sail on the beach while friend Phillip skipped and jumped over the whitecaps. Both men are from Edmonds, but didn't want to use their last names because ... well, you just never know who's reading.

With that, and with the ferries plying the chop and the Olympics reflecting the sun, Andy sped off into the blue yonder, leaving the steady ground for the rest of us.
