Weather Service Issues Alert for First Significant Wind Event of Season

100 percent chance of rain called for Monday by National Weather Service, which now has a Doppler radar station on the coast that promises more accurate readings for Puget Sound.

The National Weather Service says a change in the weather is coming to Puget Sound as two autumn weather systems arrive Sunday and Monday.

In fact, it's calling for 100 percent chance of rain in Edmonds on Monday. The expected high is only 60, much cooler than the tropical weather Edmonds and Puget Sound have experienced the past few days.

Both storms are expected to bring windy and wet weather we haven't seen in a while.

The forecast calls for rain on Sunday, but amounts will not be heavy. Winds will increase and most areas will have wind in the 15 mph to 25 mph range. The coast and north interior are forecasted to have stronger winds, probably in the 20 mph to 30 mph range.

Winds of these speeds don’t usually cause major, the weather service says, but as this is the first windy event of the season, a few weakened trees could fall.

Monday’s storm is expected to be stronger, with more wind and rain. Lowland areas are predicted to get a quarter- to half-inch of rain, and certain spots in the mountains will see two inches.

The weather service says the weather systems are unlikely to cause any flooding, but area rivers could rise sharply Monday night.

The coast and north interior will again be windy on Monday and Monday night, with winds expected in the 25 mph to 35 mph range. Other areas could see winds of 15 mph to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph in exposed locations.

Better fall weather is forecast to return by midweek.

The National Weather Service is now gathering information from a new Doppler radar station near Copalis Beach in Grays Harbor County that reads weather west of the Olympic Mountains. You can now see real-time radar images from the new Doppler station.
