UPDATE: Section of Pioneer Way Closed Until Tuesday

Damage to the road appears to be less than originally anticipated, but city workers want to make sure the road is stable before opening it up completely.

Water service has been restored to 22 homes after a cast-iron water main break on Pioneer Way in Shell Valley, reports the City of Edmonds' Public Works Department.

"We have the water back online," said Tod Moles, City of Edmonds street/storm manager. "The water department got the system back around 10 am. The cause appears to be a combination of the road and storm system settling. They found the storm line laying on top of the water main. We have a crew working on the storm system to create some separation."

Moles says the damage to the road appears to be less than originally anticipated and that the department hopes to be able to have temporary repairs in place that will hold up through the new year.

"We will come back and make permanent repairs to the road and the storm soon after the New Year's holiday," he said.

A homeowner alerted the department after the break shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday morning.

During the repair, the only way in and out of Shell Valley is through the off Main Street. The department hopes to have Pioneer Way open by the end of the day.

The break occureed in the 21300 block of Pioneer Way.

"We are going to leave a section of  Pioneer Way closed," said Moles. "A large amount of material has been displaced by the water and we want to make sure the road is stable. We will be doing a lot of clean-up as well as removing some vegetation from the top of the rockery to get a better handle on the stability of the road. I am sure it will remain closed at least until Tuesday."
