The Gateway Swings Open: Old Milltown Courtyard to be Done by December

A groundbreaking ceremony for the future community gathering place was held on Friday.

The beginning of a new meeting place for Edmonds residents and visitors began Friday during a groundbreaking ceremony for the courtyard of Old Milltown Plaza.

The city purchased the site on Fifth Avenue South in 2008 with the intent of preserving the central downtown open space for community use. The courtyard is being touted as a key community gathering space and a gateway to the downtown from the south.

The final design, adopted by City Council, includes gardens with educational signs, a hardscape area that lends a circular flow, seating areas, a small stage and a water feature.

Two local organizations were instrumental in the courtyard, said Carrie Hite, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services director. Members from the Floretum Garden Club assisted in the design process and donated $12,000. The club, founded in 1922, counts 118 members, said club president Jeri Schoenfeld. Edmonds in Bloom donated $4,000.

The majority of funds came from the city of Edmonds, which owns the courtyard but not the Old Milltown building itself.

Hite said the city is hoping for a donation from the Hazel Miller Foundation, which serves Edmonds and south Snohomish County. She added that public donations are also being accepted.

The artistic elements will incorporate pieces of Milltown's history.
