Save an Animal’s Life with PETCO’s National Adoption Event Thursday and This Weekend

Dogs and cats available to loving families.

Anyone with animals knows how they can become the center of the household.

Whether it’s sneaking treats or cuddling on the couch, our beloved dogs and cats know how to steal the show. And our hearts. But for thousands of four-legged critters throughout Puget Sound, a loving family is a distant reality. Abuse, neglect and financial problems are just a few of the reasons pets end up in shelters and foster homes, often with a limited amount of time before they are euthanized.

But there is hope, and it comes in the form of adoption. On Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, the PETCO at Aurora Village in Shoreline will be hosting National Adoption Weekend events, bringing in dogs and cats looking for loving families.

Northwest International Pet Rescue will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. “They mostly bring in small dogs,” said Tammy Carlson, a manager at PETCO, “and we always have a partner with Helping Hands for Forgotten Felines, although that is out of someone’s private home. She has kittens and adult cats, some of which have special needs.”

The retailer is also offering a pet vaccination clinic on Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. Vaccinations are an important way to keep pets, and the animals they come into contact with, healthy and safe.

If a dog or cat isn’t on your list, or you have a child dying for a pet, but don’t think they are up to the responsibility of a bigger animal, PETCO also offers in-store adoptions of reptiles and rodents. They currently have a guinea pig, a few hamsters and a bearded dragon all up for adoption.

To help new pet parents get started, Wellness brand pet food will be offering a free bag of food for all adoptions this weekend. Owners will also receive an adoption packet with coupons for food, toys and other necessities to help the new family member have the smoothest possible transition into his or her new home. There are also dog trainers, groomers and supportive animal lovers at every PETCO on hand to answer questions and offer advice.

So if you’re thinking of a new addition to the family, consider adoption before going to a breeder.

“People should consider adoption because they will save a pet’s life,” said Carlson. “They will save them from getting euthanized. When choosing an animal, it’s best to save a life.”
