Olympic View Water Tower: Time For a New Paint Job

The 130-foot tower, built in 1977, getting its first touch-up since 1994.

Earlier this summer, Olympic View Water and Sewage District opened its new 10,000-square-foot administration office on 228th St. SW in unincorporated Snohomish County.

Now it’s time to upgrade the district’s 2.5 million gallon storage tank next door.

Scaffolding now winds its way around the 130-foot-high tower, which is due for an exterior paint job, says Olympic View general manager Lynne Danielson. First, the structure has to be sand-blasted and a new coat of primer applied.

Plastic was being draped over the tower on Thursday, wind whipping it around as workers from Western Industrial readied to make sure the plastic would stay put before the end of the day.

It was seven years ago that the tower’s interior was given a fresh coat of paint. It was at that time, said Danielson, that workers discovered the original primer on the outside, last applied in 1994, had failed. It was the original paint and primer applied when the tower was built in 1977.

Painting will also be done on the top of the tower, where Clearwire, XM Radio and three cellphone companies have antennas. Service will not be interrupted, said Danielson, who added that revenue from the companies provides $100,000 a year to the district.

The Olympic View Water and Sewage District provides water to more than 14,000 people and 4,900 homes. Its service area is west of Highway 99 and 76th Avenue West, and south of 220th Street to the King County line.

Olympic View also provides sewage services to 3,800 customers. It is treated and processed at the Edmonds Wastewater Treatment Plant on Dayton Street and released into Puget Sound.

The majority of residents of incorporated Edmonds receive water and sewage service from the City of Edmonds.

Olympic View, 8128 228th St. SW, will hold an open house Sept. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 425/774-7769.
