Lake Forest Park Rotary program chair Craig Sternagel learned about Mullen after reading about her preparation for Badwater in . Sternagel, who was training for his first Half Ironman race, found Mullen's story inspiring.

Mullen, who has completed a handful of 100 mile races in the past few years, signed up for Badwater as her next big challenge. Since temperatures in Death Valley routinely exceed 120 degrees, she spent hours sitting in Seattle area saunas. Mullen also purchased white desert clothing and recruited a crew of Seattle runners to help keep her hydrated, cool, and fed during her 135 mile trek.
