Hail, Hail, the Hail's All Here

Spring often arrives late in Puget Sound. But hail and lowland snow? It's time for a spring break.

Wednesday was turning out to be such a fine day.

Edmonds residents woke up to reports of snow on the ground in Lake Stevens and Everett but were lucky enough to be sharing a weather bubble with surrounding communities. That meant no snow and no day off for kids, who are on spring break anyway.

Sure, it was overcast. Been that way for a while. But there were a few sunbreaks early on, and a full-on taste of real spring weather at about 3 p.m. when the sun broke through, felt warm, and probably convinced a few hapless souls that a visit to the beach would brighten things up.

Hah.

If you looked closely, you would have seen an angry, dark sky in the distance, ready to pounce. Sure enough, shortly after 4 p.m., the skies opened and the hail came. Sideways, at times. It didn’t last too long, but it certainly put another damper on what is supposed to be spring around here.

We’re Pacific Northwesterners, so we’re not expecting dry weather in the 70s like Southern California or temps pushing 95 already in Arizona and in some parts of the South.

But 60 would be nice. Especially after a particularly harsh winter and a storm track that just doesn’t seem willing to lay off. At this point, Friday looks like a good bet, with a high of 55 and a small chance of rain. But with all the fancy equipment around these days, it still seems like weather forecasters get it wrong half the time. So expect rain on Friday and you won’t be too disappointed if the wet stuff comes.

If there is sun on Friday, on the other hand, for heaven’s sake enjoy it.
