Gearing Up For Summer With Classic Car Show

The Fourth Annual Alderwood-Terrace Rotary car show, which takes place Friday, will feature 20 Jaguars.

Summer is officially here, and what better way to kick off the season than spending an evening browsing a collection of vintage cars, including 20 classic Jaguars?

Hosted by the Alderwood-Terrace Rotary Club, the car show will take place on Friday at the 18th fairway of the Lynnwood Golf Course.

Despite its current sizable venue, the show hasn’t always been this large.

“Our club had an annual fundraising get-together dinner and one year we had it at my house with a few cars,” explained Edmonds resident and Rotary Club member Kim Pierce. “The next year again it was at my house, but with double the amount of cars, to 14. Over 100 people showed up to look at the cars and made donations at our donation station, so we decided it was time to move it.”

Last year, the show was transferred to Edmonds Yacht Club, attracting nearly 250 people and showcasing 25 cars. They quickly outgrew that venue as well, and now will hold it at the golf course. The featured car for the year is the Jaguar, as it is the Jaguar XK-E’s 50th anniversary. According to Pierce there will be 20 Jaguars on display, from the 1950 XK120 to the new 2011 XK.

“All cars are handpicked either from referrals, knowing people with collections, car club involvement, and a lot of conversations with car people trying to locate rare cars,” Pierce said. “Specific criteria is that we look for cars that are unmodified specialty cars of the era and in like-new condition. There are also a few cars that are totally unrestored originals that are amazing time capsules."

This year’s title sponsor is Mercedes Benz of Lynnwood, which will display its newest models. Each year the participating cars change, so viewing some of the vehicles is a one-time experience.

Pierce, who worked in the car business for 40 years, has a passion for the classics. He owns two: A rare Porsche 356 and a limited production 1970 Chevy Camaro.

Tickets for the event cost $20, and proceeds go to the various charitable organizations supported by the Rotary Club, including Clothes for Kids, Student of the Month, Teacher of the Month and Student of the Year awards.

“All proceeds are used to support local programs that are geared mainly to helping fund youth programs," Pierce said. "This will be an incredible opportunity to view some very rare and expensive cars from the past in a setting unlike any car show you probably have ever been to. It really is rolling art.”
