The cause and manner of death is still pending.

The death is the first this year at the park. In January 2010, 50-year-old Garth Klein died after losing consciousness. In April 2010, 44-year-old Edmonds resident Brian Berentson died after an incident at the park left him in a coma for more than six months.

Just after 12:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Don Anderson, Edmonds Police responded to a distress call at the park, where members of Snohomish County Fire District 1 were on scene. CPR was already being performed on Dold, who was taken to shore after being found unconscious in about 30 feet of water.

Fire personnel performed CPR for about 45 minutes but were unable to revive the man.

According to the city of Edmonds, the underwater park was established in 1970 by city ordinance as a marine preserve and sanctuary. It is the most popular of 10 underwater parks that make up Washington’s underwater park system.

About 25,000 scuba divers visit the Edmonds park each year. Most are among the state’s 250,000 trained divers, though 15 percent come from out of state, mostly from Portland and Vancouver, B.C.
