Discover the Darker Side of the Beach

Join Edmonds Beach Ranger-Naturalists tonight for an after-dark adventure at Marina Beach.

Everyone enjoys the beach on a warm summer day, but it’s not often that a large crowd gathers on the sand after the sun goes down. Tonight, discover a side of the beach that is often not seen, with the annual  at Marina Beach.

“It’s a very family-oriented program,” explained Sally Lider, the  Environmental Education Coordinator. “We’ll be doing some skits that are really aimed at young children; they will be funny and at the same time educate them about marine life and beach etiquette in the marine area.”

The Moonlight Beach Adventure is an annual event, and according to Lider, who has been with the Parks Department for 20 years, it has been happening since before she started working there.

The Mark Buoy Dive Club will have a live video projection of their dive, giving beachgoers an underwater tour of the landscape beneath the waves. They will also be pulling up live specimens and putting them on display in pools for observation. All sea life will be returned to its natural habitat unharmed.

“People will be able to go and see up close and in person sea stars, hermit crabs, sea slugs and moon snails,” Lider said.

Even though it is summer, it can get chilly down by the water, so be sure to bring a jacket, and of course, since the sun will be down, don’t forget a flashlight!

 

The Moonlight Beach Adventure will take place tonight at Marina Beach from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more details call 425.771.0227.
