Dick's Drive-In Grand Opening Is Thursday in Edmonds

E-W Marching Band will be performing at the opening, which takes place during homecoming week for Edmonds-Woodway High School.

Dick's Drive-In will have its grand opening in Edmonds on Thursday, debuting its sixth restaurant, the first since 1974 and the first outside King County.

Dick's is expected to make an announcement on the opening on Tuesday.

Thursday's opening, on Oct. 20, comes almost exactly a year from the date that Dick's settled on Edmonds after conducting a online poll to determine a location. The poll was launched Sept. 20, 2010, and the north area, which Dick's indicated was Shoreline up to Everett, won with 46 percent of the 115,000 votes cast.

Dick's announced Edmonds as the new location on Oct. 15, 2010, putting it at 21900 Highway 99 in the northeast corner of the TOP Food and Drug parking lot. At the time, Edmonds Mayor Cooper said several possible locations for Dick’s in the city were discussed, including downtown, but the restaurant liked the location on busy Highway 99 and its proximity to large businesses, as well as Edmonds-Woodway High School.

The Edmonds opening on Thursday comes five months to the day since groundbreaking on May 19.

Dick's had originally planned to open last Saturday in honor of founder Dick Spady's 88th birthday, but couldn't pull it off.

Dick's wanted to be close to E-W, as mentioned, and it is doing everything it can to get students to open their wallets and buy burgers, fries and shakes. A recent "gold ticket" contest saw Dick's officials reward an E-W student. Dick's even made appearances on campus.

As part of the grand opening, the Edmonds-Woodway High School Marching Band will performing music to what is certainly expected to be an overflow crowd.

Members of the marching band, dressed in their uniforms, will march to Dick's after school and arrive by 2:30 p.m., where they will perform until 4 p.m. All those performing will receive a coupons from Dick's, which will also give the Edmonds-Woodways Booster Club a donation.

If you don't want to deal with the hassle of Thursday's opening day, you might want to consider skipping Friday as well. That's a professional development day for teachers, which means students have the day off.

Let the carnage begin.
