Edmonds: There's Just Something About This Place

Introducing new blogger Chrissy, mom of two and self-declared Edmonds fanatic.

We are a friendly family. I always like to say that people like to talk to me but that's most likely because I've initiated a conversation. My children are no different. Last week, little J, 3, bounded up to the playground at Yost Park and announced, "Oh, there's a new friend here!" And, sure enough, there was. A mom and a little boy J's age.

We started into the typical mom banter. "How old is your son?" "Do you think the rain will stop soon?" "Do you live near the park?" My newly dubbed friend told me that she had just moved to Edmonds two weeks prior. She was originally from the South and her  family moves about quite a bit for her husband's work, approximately every two years. Given this information and the fact that both of us were sneaking out to take advantage of the few rays of sunshine we were receiving that afternoon, I expected the next words out of her mouth to be "I can't believe this weather! Will the rain ever stop?" But instead, she started to tell me how much she loved Edmonds already.

"There's just something about this place," she said. We talked about the quaint downtown and the beautiful waterfront. We talked about the proximity to both Everett and Seattle, and their numerous activities for families. However, most importantly, we talked about the sense of community, how Edmonds is a big suburb with the feel of a small town.

What amazed me most about this conversation was that, in two weeks, this woman had picked up on what I love most about Edmonds. I love that, in this somewhat big town, I always see someone I know downtown. I love that Edmonds has an identity all its own, not connected to those two big cities. I love that its identity is so closely tied with the local environment, the Sound and the forests. And I love all the opportunities and possibilites Edmonds presents for my family to connect to the community.

This is what I hope to write about in this blog, what it's like to raise a family in Edmonds. I am working very hard to instill a strong sense of place in my children; developing a sense of pride, appreciation and curiosity about the world immediately outside our doorstep. I am excited to take blog readers on this journey with us. So look forward to some pure, unbashed Edmonds love, because everything looks bigger and better and more amazing when seen through the eyes of a child.
