No Blarney, No TV: Jack Murphys Expected to be Open on Wednesday

The bar from the owner of Daphnes is on Fourth Avenue North next to the future, ah, Bill the Butcher.

Brian Taylor, whose Irish pub opened Tuesday night to invited guests only and is expected to be open to the public on Wednesday, wants to make sure that people understand what his new business venture is.

It’s a bar. Not a sports bar. You won’t be able to watch the Seahawks on huge flat-screen TVs on Sundays. In fact, Jack Murphys won’t even be open on Sundays.

It’s also not a restaurant, although staff will be on hand to fix up selected menu items: mac and cheese, bangers and mash, corned beef sandwiches, meatballs marinara, pulled-pork sandwichs, chili con queso, apple tart and chocolate cakes.

Taylor also doesn’t plan much in the way of live entertainment. No fiddles, no high-stepping. Maybe some Irish music piped in.

But what you will find at Jack Murphys, says Taylor, is a place where you can talk. Where you can have a conversation while sipping Irish beer (Guinness Stout, Harp Lager, Smithwicks Ale, Kilkenny Red) or local microbrewed-beer (American IPA from Edmonds, Chuckanut Pilsner, Pike Scotch Ale, Two Beers Pale Ale, Apline Hefeweizen, Deschutes Porter, Spire Cider and Jack Murphys Amber). You’ll also be able to choose from more than 20 Irish whiskeys.

“We’re not for everybody,” said Taylor, reiterating the point. “We’re a bar.”

Jack Murphys is the second bar in Edmonds for Taylor and his wife, Louise Favier, who also owns Daphnes on Main Street, another location where interaction is encouraged. They also own a second Daphnes in Bellingham, as well as the Pencil Factory in the trendy Green Point section of Brooklyn, NY. That bar just celebrated its 10-year anniversary.

Jack Murphys is next door to the future location of , which has stood vacant for more than a year. It took Taylor only a little more than half a year to get his new venture going. “It’s sad to see (Bill the Butcher) vacant,” he said. “An Irish bar next to a butcher shop seems to be a good fit.”

Jack Murphys is at 109 Fourth Ave. N. Its hours are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. You can follow the bar on Facebook.
