Grow With Us Opening Third Location in Edmonds

Family-run preschool, daycare and learning center going up on Edmonds Way.

When she opened her first daycare center in Edmonds, Janine Jansen felt she was providing a need. And besides, she wanted to keep an eye on her two young boys.

Twenty-three years later, Jansen is now looking forward to the opening of her third Grow With Us preschool, childcare and learning center in the city. This one, scheduled to open in April, is now under construction at 665 Edmonds Way, located on the way to the ferry dock and next to Chermak Construction. The other two locations are at , which opened in 1988, and , which opened in 2000.

Jansen already has a waiting list of parents who want to enroll their children at the new location. Grow With Us now has about 130 kids enrolled at the existing locations.

The Edmonds Way spot, for kids between the age of 2½ and 12, will have a full preschool and after-school program and, like the other sites, provides van service to 13 local schools and the Head Start program at Edmonds Community College. Jansen said it will also have a 1,000-square-foot gym with a basketball court. An outdoor playground is planned, as well.

During the summer, the preschoolers go on field trips three times a week, taking trips to the beach, going bowling and participating in other activities, as well as holding bake sales.

“People trust us because they’ve been here with us through the good times and the bad,” said Jansen.

Families who need financial aid can apply for it through the Department of Social Health Services (DSHS).

“Sometimes that can really help working parents,” said Jansen, who adds that Grow With Us has competitive prices that are 15 percent below those of competitors.

Jansen, who lives in Edmonds, earned a business degree from California State University, Fresno, and studied early-childhood education.

Grow With Us certainly is a family-run operation. Jansen’s husband, Anthony, works with older children and can be spotted on Edmonds Way overseeing the new building. And one of the Jansens’ sons, 25-year-old Scott Anderson — who grew up at the original location — is a Realtor and developer who provided input into the new Edmonds Way site. At the 84th Street location, director Dede Collins employs her daughter, Shauna Roth.

“Dede has worked with me off and on since she was 18,” said Jansen. “It’s all part of the family atmosphere.”
