Girl Scouts Kick Off Cookie Drive in Edmonds

Troop 40727 participates on opening day of 97th annual sale. It's an American tradition at $4 a box.

How does a couple of Thin Mints sound?

It can be all yours now as the Girl Scouts of Western Washington kicked off their 97th annual cookie drive on Friday. In Edmonds, the official ceremony was held in front of Tully’s Coffee on Fifth Avenue South. It was the fifth straight year that customers could purchase boxes of cookies for military personnel as part of Operation Cookie Drop, sponsored by KOMO 4 and Star 101.5.

Local Girl Scouts will be selling cookies in front of local businesses through March 13. Pre-sales have already taken place.

“The girls get so much out of this program,” said Paul Drake, one of two directors of product sales for Girl Scouts of Western Washington. Drake, who lives in Edmonds, was on hand at the sale on Friday. “The girls learn about organization, goals, money management and social skills through approaching people.”

Diane Hobbs from Edmonds-based Troop 40727 was stationed at Tully's with two of her scouts, Kyrsten and Mariah, as they sold their $4 boxes of cookies to the public. “It’s our only fundraiser of the year,” Hobbs said, “and it supports their activities.”

Hobbs added that her troop will also use some of its proceeds to help environmental causes. The troop keeps 70 cents of each box sold, with the rest going to the Girl Scouts of Western Washington to support all troops.

In 2010, said Drakes, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington raised more than $110,000.

Girl Scouts of Western Washington serves more than 26,000 girls in grades K-12. Girls participate in age-based programs as part of a troop or as individual Girl Scouts.
