Eighty-Nine Apartments, With Commercial Space, Planned on Edmonds Way East of Westgate Chapel

Seattle developer to construct two buildings near 232nd Street SW. A public hearing is scheduled June 15.

A mixed-use development that includes apartments and commercial space is planned for SR 104 (Edmonds Way) between 232nd St. SW and the entrance to the Woodway Estates apartment complex. The site is east of Westgate Village and Westgate Chapel.

Seattle-based Goodman Real Estate, working with Studio Meng Strazzara architecture, has proposed two buildings, at 23014 Edmonds Way and 23020 Edmonds Way, that together will have 89 apartments and 5,800 square feet of commercial space. One of the buildings is four stories, with three stories for apartments and the lower level for commercial space. The other has three stories of apartment space.

According to Gina Coccia, associate planner for the city of Edmonds, a public meeting concerning the project is scheduled June 15 in the City Council Chambers, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

In the proposal submitted to the city, Seattle-based Studio Meng Strazzara says the Edmonds Way project is part of a series of new models for the “design and development of apartment buildings in a severely impacted real estate economy.” Further, the architect says, the total construction cost is less than $120 per square-foot, as anything over that amount would not be feasible. The plan is to “maximize (the) number of dwelling units.”

The apartments are being targeted to young professionals and working families who are at or slightly above the median income of the area, said Chris Davidson of Studio Meng Strazzara. According to a U.S. Census report from 2007, the median income for a household in Edmonds was $61,105, and the median income for a family was $85,206.

The development plans to have a variety of landscaping along the curb and surrounding the buildings.
