Ed-gaar: Mariners Legend to Promote Line of Mezcal at Demetris in Edmonds

Leave your baseball memorabilia at home: The baseball star will be signing bottles of El Zacatecano only.

When not saving baseball in Seattle or waiting for his hopeful induction into baseball’s Hall of Fame, Seattle Mariners legend Edgar Martinez is promoting his latest business venture, a line of artisanal mezcal called El Zacatecano.

Martinez will be appearing at in Edmonds on Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m. to sign unopened El Zacatecano bottles, available at Demetris. He will not sign baseball memorabilia.

Martinez will also be helping Demetris raise funds for Camp Korey, a Skagit County-based organization that serves children with serious and life-threatening medical conditions and their families at no cost.

Admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door. The cost includes one El Zacatecano specialty cocktail with a small appetizer. You can also choose to taste the three types of El Zacatecano, El Zacatecano Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo, distilled in Mexico from the Weber’s Blue Agave plant.

El Zacatecano is an award-winning mezcal—a cousin to tequila—that Mexico has produced for 100 years. Martinez is helping to introduced the brand to the U.S. through a partnership with Seattle salon owner Gene Juarez.

Martinez, 48, played his entire career with Mariners as a third baseman and designated hitter. He finished with a .312 batting average and 309 home runs. He won two American League batting titles.

Although many think he deserves to be in hall of fame, Martinez has twice been rejected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He received 36 percent of the vote in 2010, his first year eligible, and 33 percent this year. Players need 75 percent of the vote to be inducted.

Martinez, a fan favorite serenaded by chants of “Ed-gaar” at the Kingdome and Safeco Field, is best known for The Double. In the deciding game of the 1995 AL Division Series against the New York Yankees, with the Mariners losing 5-4, Martinez slashed a double to left, scoring Joey Cora and Ken Griffey Jr. to win the game.

That hit, and the win, has been credited with saving baseball in Seattle, as earlier that year owners were looking to move the team.
